5th general high school is a secondary school located in Veria, a city near Thessaloniki (co-capital of Greece).Veria has 5 secondary schools, with students aged 15-18.It is a school of general education (not a vocational high school) and provides general education knowledge. It consists of three classes. In the first grade, all students are taught general education courses such as: mathematics, physics, chemistry, Greek and European language / literature and ancient European and Greek history, English and German. In the second grade students attend general education and general education courses which they choose depending on the university / specialty they intend to attend. In the third and final grade students attend basic course instruction. At the end of the last class, students take state-level exams and, with their performance, can attend university studies. It should be noted that the exams are very difficult and the study of the children very heavy. 5th General high school has 250 students and 25 teachers. In the context of non-formal education, an environmental content group operates at the 5th High School in Veria. Nearly 70% of first and second-grade students join this group; students meet at the school at weekends to discuss about the environment and its problems, and often take field trips to get familiar with such beneficial results of the environment, as well as the pollution that humans have caused. At the same time, the school -for the years 2018-2020- has been very successful in implementing two Erasmus programs on the environment; one on water and the other on environment, sustainability and democracy.Mr. Asikidis Michael, teacher of Biology at the school and PhD holder of the University of Thesaloniki and Ms. Karagianni Franka, teacher of Greek Literature and History at the school, are the key figures. They are both implementing the non-formal environmental education program and implementing with Mrs Thymiopoulou Christina, a German teacher at the school, the Erasmus program whose subject is water. The specific reasons for engaging in the program are its subject as teachers and students of the school like environmental issues and this has been demonstrated by the team working for over a decade with students exceeding 70% of the first and second high school. It is worth noting that this group does not accept the students of the last class in the school, as the meetings take place at the weekend and the students of this class do not have time to attend due to the very exhausting preparation for the university exams. So, 70 to 80 students meet on weekends in the school premises to discuss about the environment. The truth is that the subject of climate change has been a major concern for students so far, as they have studied water, forest, atmosphere and discussed about climate change. It would be interesting to approach this issue from all perspectives and get to know peers' thoughts from other parts of our continent about this problem.
